Do you wonder why I post so many recipes with cauliflower in them? It's because of the phytonutrients!!!
Cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable that is part of the brassicaceae family, most of which are loaded with Vit A, K, C, folate and glucosinolates, which is a phytonutrient contained in this family of veggies.
Cruciferous veggies are known to reduce inflammation in the body and people who consume large quantities in their diet show reduced cancer as well. Check out this article on WebMD for more info on the benefits of consuming this family of veggies.
One of the main goals of my nutrition plan is to reduce inflammation, because chronic inflammation is know to result in a multitude of diseases if allowed to progress.
If you want to be healthier in general, reduce inflammation! One of the biggest factors in inflammation is our diet. We have to eliminate certain things, but we need to be conscious to fuel our bodies with nutrient dense food as well so they have what they need to perform at their peak and in a state of health. And the ideal diet is not the same for everyone, it even varies as things change in our body.
With the science of epigenetics we now have the opportunity to tailor our diet and our medical care to our specific genetics and learn how to alter our genetic presentation via diet and lifestyle. Then with bloodwork and a trained practitioner we can continue to tweak things as they change in our body.
If you are interested in epigenetic testing I would encourage you to check out Nutrition Genome for testing, they provide an extremely detailed report of your genetic SNP's and how diet and lifestyle affect how these SNP's present. I would also highly recommend a trained practitioner to help you interpret the report in order to get the most benefit out of it. They have a list of nutritionists, naturopaths, etc on their site that specialize in different things that can help you in this area. This is how I found my nutritionist, Jen, with Remission Nutrition...who then referred me to my integrative oncologist.
Since working with them it has truly been life changing, I've watched my labs get better and better, moving towards a healthier me! My inflammatory markers are coming down, my insulin & HbA1c has dropped, I'm metabolically flexible and feel great!
