All Natural DIY Deodorant

I had someone ask me about what I use for personal care products, so I'm going to start sharing some of that info along with food recipes!

What we put on our bodies via cosmetics, cleaning supplies, etc is extremely important, as skin is our largest organ in our body and absorbs everything we put on it.

If we focus on only what we are putting in our bodies by changing our diet, we are leaving out a huge part of the equation if we aren't also addressing personal hygiene care and home supplies.

Just remember it's a process, and don't beat yourself up if you don't change everything immediately. I've changed things and then realized that it still is bad in some way, just adjust and keep going.

I'm going to start with deodorant, I have been using this on and off for about 10 years now. I'm back on as of recently and not going back!

Deodorant can be a challenging one because natural deodorants are often very irritating. I absolutely could not do any with bicarbonate or arrowroot powder in them because they caused a horrible, painful rash, it was just too abrasive.

I even tried some store bought ones and they either straight up didn't work and I smelled or they caused a rash as well. I work (dental hygienist) waaaayyyyy too close to people to be stinky.

What I found that worked great for me and is literally the cheapest and easiest option out there is magnesium oil. Boil some filtered water and dissolve the magnesium crystals, if you'd like add a little essential oil and pour into a dark glass spritzer bottle. The container of magnesium I bought will probably last another 10 years.

Also, after some time I quit sweating too and I've always pitted out bad even if I'm cold.

Tips for Newbies

When starting out I would recommend using 1 part magnesium to 2-3 parts water, it can be very irritating initially. I now use 1:1 ratio.

DO NOT use the day you shave, OUCH!!!! It freaking burns like crazy and will cause a rash like razor burn.

Don't use everyday, especially when starting out. I would recommend 2-3x/wk to start and adjust based on your body. Again, using too often can cause a rash.

Right now it's the middle of winter and I use it 2-3x/wk, in the summer I'll use it 3-5x/wk, still not typically every day.

Also, a side note about deodorant. I developed a rather sizeable lump in my breast about 8 years ago, it was biopsied and came back benign so they left it. That is what got me motivated to try to find a clean deodorant option that actually worked for me. This lump would always cause a lot of pain the week of my cycle, I could literally feel my heartbeat in it during that week. But when I would stop using regular deodorant I never even noticed the lump, and zero pain during my cycle. I went on and off regular deodorant several times, and without fail it would come back when I was using it and go away when I would stop using it. So, take that for what it's worth.
